Acoustic slat panels have become one of the most popular feature walls in UK and Irish homes. They look great behind a TV, a bed or in a hallway. But once they're up, most people ask the same question: how do I hang a shelf on them?
The felt backing and the slats make normal shelf brackets awkward. Here are your options, and the easiest way to do it.
Why ordinary shelves don't work well on slat panels
- Brackets don't sit flat. A standard bracket needs a flat wall. On a slat panel it either sits on one slat and rocks, or squashes the felt in the gap.
- The felt isn't a fixing surface. Screws into the felt alone won't hold anything with weight.
- Drilling through to the wall means finding the gap, avoiding battens and cables, and leaves holes if you move the shelf later.
Option 1: Slot-in shelves made for slat walls (easiest)
Shelves made for slat panels have a hook on the back that drops into the gap between two slats. Because the slats run floor to ceiling, you can put the shelf at any height you like.
Our matt black 200mm and 400mm slat wall shelves and 4-peg shelf work this way. Hook them into the gap, check they're level, then add one screw for extra hold. No brackets, and you can move them later.
Check your panel first
Slot-in shelves need the right gap. Most 600mm wide acoustic panels have 15 slats with a gap of about 14mm between them (40mm from the centre of one slat to the next). To check yours:
- Count the slats across one 600mm panel. 15 is the standard.
- Put a ruler across the gap between two slats. About 14mm is what you're looking for.
- Not sure? Send us a photo with a ruler across the gap and we'll tell you if our shelves fit.
Option 2: Screw through the slats into battens
If your panels are fixed to timber battens, you can screw a shelf or bracket through a slat into the batten behind. Use a detector to find the battens and any cables first. This is fine for one fixed shelf, but the position is set by your battens, and you'll leave screw holes if you change your mind.
Option 3: Hooks and pegs
For coats, bags, headphones or plants, a peg rail is often more useful than a shelf. Our 4-peg shelf gives you hooks underneath and a small ledge on top for keys or decor, which makes it ideal for hallways.
Styling ideas
- Bedroom: one 200mm shelf each side of the bed as a floating bedside table for a phone, glasses and a lamp.
- Living room: two or three 400mm shelves at staggered heights beside the TV for plants, books and speakers.
- Hallway: a 4-peg shelf at shoulder height for coats and keys.
- Home office: a 400mm shelf above the desk for books and a small plant.
Odd numbers usually look best. Three shelves at different heights is the most popular setup.
